One of the fundamental rights for workers in Indonesia that must be held is protection of occupational health and safety. The implementation of the protection of the problem above is the responsibility of all parties, including the government, companies, and the community.
The implementation of occupational health and safety must be cultivated to prevent work accidents and occupational diseases. This is in line with the rules issued by the International Labor Organization or International Labor Organization (ILO). This is a concern because there are still high mortality rates due to accidents and illnesses related to work.
Participate in Suppressing Work Accidents
Based on international data from the ILO, it was found that there are more than 300 million accidents occurring at work each year. In addition, there are 2.3 million deaths per year due to illness or injury caused by work. In Indonesia, the construction sector contributes as much as 30% of the total accidents experienced by workers. In order to reduce the number of work accidents, all parties should participate. The following are some guidelines for industry owners in improving the health and safety aspects of their workers:Understand the risks that might arise
To reduce the risk of work accidents, be sure to know what risks might arise related to occupational health and safety in the area being undertaken. This step is called a risk assessment. After knowing the risks that may arise, then think about the steps that need to be taken to protect workers on the job site.
Trust in competent parties
In dealing with occupational health and safety issues, it is recommended to appoint a competent party to manage it. People who are competent in this matter usually have obtained skills and licenses from the authorized institutions.
Describe clearly
Describe clearly the duties of each party in managing matters related to occupational health and safety at the work site. Provide clarity of responsibility about who, what, when and how to do it. Not only concerning who is responsible, but also should include technical aspects in the field.
Perform worker coaching
It is mandatory for industrial owners or management to provide guidance, especially to new workers, such as the introduction of the work environment, duties and responsibilities, guidance in preventing accidents, and how to extinguish fires.
Provide sufficient knowledge to workers
Provide adequate information about health and safety at work, to each of the parties concerned. Likewise, provide information about the risks they might face and how to deal with them.
Provide proper workplace facilities
Another thing that is no less important and also needs attention is to give workers a good facility in the workplace. Starting from the toilet, drinking water, a place to put clothes, as well as adequate locations for eating and resting. Make sure the workplace in the room has good air circulation, clean, get enough light, and adequate capacity of the room so that workers do not jostle. Also make sure the work location has adequate first aid kits or kits for accidents (P3K).
