Recognize the signs of intestinal worms in children and how to overcome them

As a parent, it is very important to recognize the signs of intestinal worms in children. This is because intestinal worms are a contagious disease which is still a health problem for the people of Indonesia, especially in children. Worms often occur in children aged 5-10 years. Although this disease can be overcome by administering worm medication, the possibility of recurrence of this infection remains vulnerable, especially if no precautions are taken.

Signs of Worms in Children You Need to Know

Sticking worm eggs on a child's hands or feet accidentally, which is then swallowed and entered the body, is one of the most common ways of transmitting worm infections in children. Most cases of intestinal worms can not show a serious sign. But in some conditions, there are distinctive signs of intestinal worms that can be recognized, namely:
  • Itching around the anus, especially at night.
  • Restless or uncomfortable during sleep, because it often scratches around the anus.
  • Easily angry and offended.
  • Redness or skin irritation around the anus.
  • Often feel sick stomach.
  • Lack of appetite, so that it can cause weight loss.
Not only that, some types of worms can also be seen when a child defecates or in the child's anus. One type of worm looks like small pieces like white thread with a shape like staples that are about 2-13 mm in size.

How to Overcome Worms in Children

Basically, the way to cope with intestinal worms is to break the chain of transmission of intestinal worms by applying a clean and healthy lifestyle and taking worm medicine. The implementation of a clean and healthy lifestyle can be done in the following ways:

1. Routinely wash your hands using soap

Teach children to wash their hands properly, in order to reduce the risk of being exposed to or spreading worm eggs. Familiarize children to wash their hands, especially after playing, before and after using the bathroom, and before and after eating.

2. Always wear clean clothes

Also make it a habit for children to always wear clean clothes and change clothes every day.

3. Cut the nails when it's long.

Trim your child's nails regularly, especially when it's long, so that there isn't enough room for worm egg growth.

4. Using footwear

When children play and go outside, use clean, comfortable footwear. This is to reduce the risk of transmitting worm infections in children.

5. Wash clothes with hot water

You can also use hot water to wash sheets, bed clothes, underwear, and towels, to kill worm eggs that might stick. Then, dry it in the hot sun or a drying machine with hot temperatures. In addition, as much as possible to prevent children to scratch the anus if it feels itchy, and pay attention to the cleanliness of the food consumed. Furthermore, if the child appears to experience symptoms of intestinal worms, administration of worm medicine can be the solution. Some types of worm medicines that can be chosen are mebendazole, albendazole, and pyrantel pamoate. If you see signs of intestinal worms in children, it is advisable to check with your doctor. The doctor will provide treatment in accordance with the child's condition.
